From the NYTimes piece:

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., and 22 other senators, would impose penalties of up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million for war profiteering and restore a rule that prohibits awarding federal contracts to companies exhibiting a pattern of breaking the law in performance of government contracts.

That rule, put in place by President Clinton, was dropped by the Bush administration upon taking office, Dorgan said.

Seems like there must already be laws on the books to prosecute these outrages - nothing will happen until the Dems reqain control of the Justice Department as of 2009. The war profiteers better set up housekeeping in Paraguay by then.

During my illness, I watched TV (which I rarely do) and saw a few episodes of a History Channel series called "Hitler's Managers." From the Nazi generals to Speer and others, it spoke to the crimes committed and the punishments (if any) incurred. Many of them, even the ones tried at Nueremburg, got off light. 20 years for mass murder just doesn't seem right, not to mention the extended vacations to South America. Remind you of any other regimes?

Well, "wasted" is a very subjective term. I'm sure that from the BushCo. perspective, everyone who got that money was *very* deserving.

100,000 acres in Paraguay? That's called planning for retirement.
