Valentine Songs

Okay, so I moved, lifted my washing machine by myself and tore cartilage in my already chronically damaged knee. My only excuse for being so long-absent is lameness--literally. Happy Valentines Day nonetheless. Hugs and kisses to all my peeps. Here is my musical message.

Death By Chocolate

My sincerest apologies for being away so suddenly and unexplainedly. I find myself engaged in the politics of living full force as the one year anniversary of the break-up of my relationship shows up on my doorstep. It has been a whirlwind these last few weeks, with work, no work, travel, dating , no dating, sex, no sex, you get the idea. Music seems to be, yet again, my only refuge from the doldrums, the pensive, exhausting, roundabout I've been on lately. Sia continues to be my muse and her song styling lulls me into a false sense of security or sumthin'. Let her sing to you. [Production Note: Beck on guitar and Giovanni Ribisi does back-up vocals...who knew??]

And by the way, I'm extremely disappointed with the choice of Ken Salazar for Interior.

Sunday Night at the Movies

Well sorta. I love Thomas Newman and his score for the Sam Mendes film American Beauty. Two clips featuring his music: The opening of the movie, Dead Already and its final scene, Still Dead. If you haven't seen the movie, spoiler alert.

Long Time Comin'

Seal does a doubleheader, the Sam Cooke classic "A Change Gonna Come" and "Newborn Friend." Also, footage from the 2008 Democratic Convention, "The American Promise," set to music. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Tuesday Night Music Club

Abby Ahmad Live in NYC "Tri-Me"

I need to step outside. Another day marks another way. Marks a new reason to hide.
It's true when you slip, you slide. On the ground, been pushed down by this primitive pride. [complete lyrics]

New Music Wednesday

Last year I posted a great song by a charming and talented young Irishman named Eoghan Colgan. His song "Can I Leave Alive?" is a poignant query from the point of view of those innocents caught up in war. One of his latest ventures is a song he wrote and recorded for Barack Obama, "A Change is in Place." Give the song your attention and Eoghan your feedback.

Bittersweet Symphony

My mood fluctuates between angry, sad and kinda flat. In my angsty-teenage-boy moment I present The Verve, Bittersweet Symphony:

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
No change, I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold , I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no,no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

Well, I've never prayed,
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind , I feel free now
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

No change, I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold , I am here with my mold
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold, no, no, no, no, no

(Well have you ever been down?)
(I can't change, I can't change...)
(Ooooohhhhh...)
'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, trying to find some money then you die
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah
You know I can't change, I can't change, I can't change,
but I'm here in my mold, I am here in my mold
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold, no,no,no,no,no
I can't change my mold, no,no,no,no,no
I can't change my mold, no,no,no,no,no

(It justs sex and violence melody and silence)
(It justs sex and violence melody and silence)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)
(It justs sex and violence melody and silence)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)
(Been down)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)(Lalalalalalaaaaaaaa...)
(Ever been down)
(Ever been down)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)
(Have you ever been down?)

Somersaulting Home

somersault:
1. A movement (as in gymnastics) in which a person turns forward or backward in a complete revolution along the ground or in the air bringing the feet over the head; also : a falling or tumbling head over heels
2. A complete reversal, as of sympathies or opinions.

This speaks for me. I'll explain this more over the weekend. In the meantime one of my favorite bands Zero 7 singing Somersault:

You're the prince to my ballerina
You feed other people's parking meters
You encourage the eating of ice cream
You would somersault in the sand with me

You talk to loners, you ask how's your week
You give love to all and give love to me
You're obsessed with hiding the sticks and stones
When I fear the unknown
You feel like home, you feel like home

You put my feet back on the ground
Did you know you brought me around
You were sweet and you were sound
You saved me

You're the warmth in my summer's breeze
You're the ivory to my ebony keys
You would share your last jelly bean
You would somersault in the sand with me

You put my feet back on the ground
Did you know you brought me around
You were sweet and you were sound
You saved me

You put my feet back on the ground
Did you know you brought me around
You were sweet and you were sound
See I had shrunk yet still you brought me around
And 'round and 'round

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

I had a chat with Jim Yancy today. We talked about politics, Katrina recovery, the Bush administration, how the USAF has changed and a general shooting of the shit. I left him today feeling a bit more hopeful about the state-of-the-nation in spite of the impending doom that has been lurking.

I've been really busy with work and have had less time to post the last couple of months but a lot of why has been due to feeling so down about the way things are going in the world. Today, just music and a bit of recharging for my spirit, and maybe yours as well. I give you Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger as interpreted by the clever "Daft Hands"

And Kanye West's hip hop version:
