McCreepy Courts the 'Joe Critter Redneck' Vote

McCain pollster Bill-the-Pollster-McInturff talks to MSNBC's Chuck Todd about the 'ideal voter' to pull Senator McAncient over the electoral finish line. "...down-scale, less educated, rural, older, White, voter..."

Not just uneducated, but average range intelligence, which really is rather lacking in critical thinking skills at the level needed to parse through political spin doctoring!

Maybe McInturff's right - there seems to be no shortage of such voters, particularly if you leave out the "rural" part.

Don't you hate when that happens?

I believe an intentional, systematic, dumbing-down of Americans has been in the works for about a generation. The attack on public schools, the loss of art and music, the social sciences; the "citizenship" aspects of public education have been removed, defunded, de-emphasized, and an eradication of common courtesy seem to have been the plan since President Ronald Reagan declared his intention to end the Dept. of Education.

As Governor of California, Reagan began that very task and the right-wing has institutionalized those ideas; the dumbing-down, or "low-information voter" has become a staple in the cupboard of the GOP strategy for winning elections.

Paul Weyrich's infamous soundbite from his speech given nearly thirty years ago, encapsulates the premise well:"I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of the people. They never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

In the late 80's Allan Bloom's "Closing of the American Mind" was near the beginning of republican projection of Straussian values was thrust upon the American psyche. This brand of thinking is endemic in the current ideologic thinking of republicans. The "authoritarian personality" John Dean speaks of in his book "Conservatives Without Conscience."

We have the responsibility to ourselves, our children, our country and its future to insist on, fight for and reclaim critical thinking as a fundamental American and democratic value. If we don't, we are truly doomed.
